The omnidirectional polar pattern
Bidirectional
Also known as a “figure of eight” microphone, these mics capture sounds equally
from the front and back. These microphones can be used to record a conversation
between two people sitting across from each other when a second mic cannot be
used in the setup.
The bidirectional polar pattern
Hybrids
Some microphones, such as the Studio Projects B3 ($159.95), feature a switch the
user can manipulate to change the polar pattern of the mic. In a sense, this hybrid
capability allows the microphone to serve as three instruments in one. Depending on
your needs as a podcaster, you may or may not have a use for this feature.
