Signal-to-Noise Ratio (S/N or SNR)
The signal-to-noise ratio measures the strength of the sound signal relative to
background noise (hiss, hum and static). The higher the number (measured in
decibels), the cleaner the signal.
Impedance
Impedance is a measurement in ohms of a microphone’s resistance to an audio
signal. Mics with a hard-wired cable that terminate in a 1/4" jack are generally high
impedance, while mics with a plug-in, balanced audio cable and XLR connector are
low impedance. High impedance microphones are generally pretty cheap, but they
lose signal strength and sound quality when connected to cables roughly 16 to 32
feet or more in length. Thus, a lower impedance rating is better. Impedance ratings
vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but here are some general guidelines:
Low impedance (less than 600 ohms)
Medium impedance (600
?
- 10,000 ohms)
High impedance (greater than 10,000 ohms)
In order to avoid a loss of signal strength, a low impedance microphone should be
connected to an input with the same or higher impedance.
Visit the PoducateMe Web site to review a wide selection of microphones listed in the
site’s microphone section (http://poducateme.com/hardware/#microphones).
Microphone Accessories
There are a few items you’ll want to pick up to get the most out of your microphone.
These accessories include mic stands, shock mounts and pop filters. A complete
selection of microphone accessories can be viewed on the PoducateMe Web site
Mic Stands
If you’re going to be conducting sit-down interviews or any type of recording in which
you’ll be utilizing something other than a handheld microphone, the use of mic stands
is imperative. Fortunately, these stands are not very expensive. To record in-person
CareerChat interviews, we utilize a couple of OnStage DS7200 Adjustable Desktop
Microphone Stands ($14.95 each).
Shock Mounts
Many professional microphones will come with a holding bracket known as a “shock
mount.” These devices attach to the microphone stand and suspend the mic in a
springed cradle that isolates the instrument from vibration and floor or table rumble,
which may affect recording. If your mic doesn’t come with a shock mount, check out
