While virtual mixing is an inexpensive and convenient method of working with audio,
there are podcasters who prefer the feel of the knobs, sliders and buttons provided on an
outboard mixer over the clicking and dragging of a mouse. These podcasters turn to
mixing surfaces to enjoy the benefits of virtual mixing and physical mixing at the same
time.
Mixing (Control) Surfaces
Mixing surfaces allow the operator to drag faders in opposite directions and push multiple
buttons simultaneously—feats that can’t be accomplished with a mouse. Functioning in
much the same way as an outboard mixer, mixing surface manipulations affect
corresponding commands in the mixing software. For example, sliding a fader on the
mixing surface will move the fader in the mixing software, and adjusting an EQ knob on
the mixing surface will simultaneously adjust the EQ knob in the software. Mixing
surfaces such as Behringer’s BCF2000 MIDI Controller With Faders ($199.99) are
programmable and feature motorized faders for ultimate control of virtual mixers.
