Some control surfaces will offer instrument connections, including phantom-powered XLR
inputs for condenser mics; the means to mix audio; onboard DSP and the ability to record
to the unit’s internal hard drive, CD, compact flash or smart media cards. This type of
self-contained unit is known as a Studio-in-a-Box.
Using a product such as Tascam’s DP01FX 8-Track Hard Disk Recorder ($449.95)
eliminates the need for a computer to produce your podcast. Actually, a studio in a box is
a computer, just not of the word-processing, Web-surfing variety. These units are
designed to mix and record audio and cannot be used for much anything else. Still, for
convenience, price and portability, they can’t be beat.
