Handheld Recorders
If you’re looking to do some podcasting in the field, it’s not always possible or desirable to
carry a laptop, interface, mixer and other equipment with you. For field recording, you
might try Belkin’s Voice Recorder for iPod ($41.33) or Griffin’s iTalk Voice Recorder for
iPod ($38.95). These are small microphones that plug into the top of an iPod and
transform the music player into a nifty little handheld audio recorder. While these
recording accessories provide a convenient and inexpensive means of recording in the
field, they are fairly limiting and the audio quality the products yield is less than ideal. Pre-
fifth generation iPods can record only at 8kHz.
All iPods manufactured after 2005 (except the Shuffle) are able to record 16-bit audio at
sample rates of 22.05kHz mono and 44.1kHz stereo. Two popular iPod microphone
attachments capable of recording at this CD-quality level are Belkin’s TuneTalk Stereo
